Who is Jesus?
“Simon Peter answered and said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”(Matthew 16:16)
Have you ever heard the name “Jesus”? Some people say He was a great prophet who was born by a young virgin woman, some others believe He was an ordinary man who taught some interesting things and was killed after some time. Yet, others say He was the Son of God who died and came back to life and has been alive ever since. Let’s look at a few facts about Jesus.
How was Jesus born?
Jesus was born, indeed by a young woman who was a virgin. God, the Maker of all things put His Spirit inside of her and caused her to conceive a baby. God sent an angel to deliver the message of conception to the young woman and instructed her to name the child Immanuel. That baby was the One about whom many prophecies had been given centuries before He was born. One of which was recorded in Isaiah 7:14
“Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” As you can already tell, Jesus was not an ordinary man. He was the Son of God Himself. God’s Spirit was the Father of this Jesus we speak about. If you are wondering, Jesus was also called Immanuel.
What did Jesus do?
Jesus became a great teacher and Prophet as He walked the streets of Jerusalem. He was the reality of the scripture
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me. Became He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18)
Jesus told people about the mercy of God and the judgment of God; All men have sinned but because God is merciful and full of love for all He has created, He was calling all men to Himself. Jesus called men to receive the help they so desperately needed. Jesus, using parables and stories, taught people about God’s nature and He showed all who followed Him how to live a life that was acceptable to God.
Jesus said that He was indeed the Son of God who had been promised to come and face punishment for the wickedness of all them that would put their faith in His sacrifice.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
He proved this with His deep compassion for people. He healed those who were sick and spent days teaching thousands of people who would listen. He brought back from the dead, people who had died and He proved beyond reasonable doubt that God was in Him. He exposed the wicked works of darkness that people loved and showed people the true way to walk righteously.
What happened to Him?
“And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19)
Jesus was killed by crucifixion on a cross on a hill. This was the plan of salvation which He had been born to accomplish, according to the predetermined will of God the Father. Isaiah 53 describes in detail how the Son of God, Jesus paid the price for yours and my wicked nature, works, thoughts, and words so that we can come to God with a clean conscience that our fine has been paid and we can live in holiness.
“He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, everyone, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all…”

Jesus is alive now!
This Jesus was killed but He didn’t remain in the grave. God in His power raised Him back to life and He is now seated above, in heaven. This is why we can put our faith in Him. Hundreds of people saw Him after His resurrection. As many as believing that He is the Son of God, to them He gives the power to become children of the most high God. Jesus, the Son of God is still calling men to abandon their sin and accept the pardon God freely gives through Him. Will you accept this gift today?
